Kingdoms of men – the creation of an army

Update jan’20

As I finished a unit of light cavalry, I added these guys underneath the post. Also changed the point allowances for KoW 3rd edition.

Original post: Intro

Back in 2012 or so – when I still played Warhammer instead of Kings of War- my brother got me an army he bought from ebay as a gift. As was then en-vogue, this army had the talabecland colours (red/white). While it was painted with a steady hand, it was also painted with little technique, i.e. all colours were painted where they should, but no shading, layering, etc.

This army has been left into storage for a long, long time. I mean, I already owned an empire army (these yellow-black buggers), so why would I spend time doing another one? It’s featured a few times as an allied detachment in larger battles; but as my yellow-black army grew, this was less and less the case.

Transsition to Kings of War

As I started playing Kings of War, I wanted to be able to field two of the same army. As I have introduced quite a few people to the game, it helps to have two the same armies to teach the rules. As I had the models available, why not?

As time progressed, I wanted to multibase this army; particulary because the basing is my favorite part of the hobby. As I had the models painted to a okay-ish level, this prevented me from painting another army in order to get to multibase it.

The original contents

The army originally featured 20 swordsmen, 18 spearmen, 18 handgunners (all including full command), a cannon, 10 knights and a steam tank painted in different colours. (Altdorf red and blue, who ever came up with this un-heraldic colour scheme? Brr….)

Some multibasing later…..

Of course I had to paint a few more minis. 18-20 men ain’t gonna build me a horde. That said, PMC for a horde is 28, so there’s only 8-10 models to paint for a horde. I also bought a few altdorf-colored halberdiers cheap, so with a slab of additional paint these guys could also fit it. Finally, the tank needed some serious patching up -which I did.

The results

and a bunch of close ups.

I’m really happy with the shield wall unit who look like they’re into the forest. The spearmen horde shows a battlefield manouvre and the artillery is seperate from the crew – the crew can also support my volley guns or my cannon. As such, the mortars can also be switched out with my other Kingdoms of men army.

how many points is this army?

According to easyarmy the models of this army add up to 1,800 points (1,670 points in 2nd) without magical items or upgrades. (leaving the two army standards on foot out as I don’t need more than 3 inspiring) This means that the army almost hits the 2,000 points (the number we usually play)

If need be, I can also upgrade to 2,000 as add a general on winged beast (see below) for 190, leaving 10 points for items. (I probably will skip one of the characters for some upgrades. (the wizard wants bane chant; one of the hordes brew of strength, arquebussier horde the jar of the four winds, heroes on horse slashing/crushing, etc)

General with winged beast. Oldhammer figure, who remembers him?

Of course the army can also double as League of Rhordia with ease. Replace the siege artillery with volley guns and split up the arq horde into regiments.

Additions in 2019:

In 2019 I added a unit, the first since it was completed back in 2018. It’s a troop of mounted scouts:

Then there’s also this pegasus ->. The pegasus was painted back in the Warhammer days and there’s also a yellow rider as alternative. This means that this pegasus can be used with the rider in the Eyrebost army, but also with the other rider in the original KoM army.

Why am I proud of this project?

Unlike my other kingdoms of men army, this project is now officially complete. I’ll probably not paint anything new for this army for some time, and if I need space, I might sell it off.

Like my abyssals, it’s good to complete stuff. Unlike my main army, which is an ongoing process forever. 🙂
