Hobby update – bits and pieces and pasticard vanguard terrain

Before I played the tournament in December, I had to finish the Monarch. With about 2 days to spare, I finished her. Just after the tournament, I stopped painting for a few weeks to focus on other stuff.

Now the dust has settled, I restarted some old projects and started a few new bits and pieces. This blog post goes through all of this!

First of all, I wanted a few new knights. My tournament list didn’t have enough (horde and 2 regiments) so I tested a list with even more knights. The result was a list that wasn’t fun enough to actually play, but something I’d like to build. That means, I need at least one more regiment of knights and preferably two.

I started painting a Order of Redemption knight a long time ago, but I never finished a single model, let along a full regiment, until now. The first three knights have been finished, four more are on the painting table as we speak. Eventually, this probably will add up to a single regiment and if I can find enough models in my bits box, even a full horde.

Dungeon saga

I bought Dungeon Saga (aka Mantic’s own Hero Quest) to play with my little girl. The oldest is 5 and therefore old enough to start playing Wargames with daddy! In our first games, the heroes (Orlaf and Rhordin) didn’t particulary appeal, so I made two new heroines:

On The right is the Rhordin-replacement (Because: hammer) and below the Orlaf replacement. (because: sword)

Dungeon sage is particulary suited to play with children, though 5 is a little too young to play the full game. As a veteran DnD GM, daddy can run a dungeon crawler even for his own daughters. Just note that the attention span is no more than 20 minutes, so the challenge is to create an adventure lasting just about this long!

Vanguard terrain

In our gaming group we bought the Vanguard book. One of our friends loves to build terrain, which does favour Vanguard better than Kings of War. Secondly, I still have fond memories for Mordheim, so I’m game for another skirmish game!

To facilitate the game, I built the guard tower below:

I love the result, it’s big enough to fit a Kings of War regiment (about 11 cm square) but can also be used as a Vanguard bit of terrain. The guard tower has an inbuilt ladder on the back, but for good Vanguard playstyle, it needs a 2nd ladder or walkway.

I built it using plasticard which I covered with sand using PVA glue.

Goblins

When other models are drying, I usually paint a goblin or two. The linger around my painting station and from time to time, one is finished. We’re now at 15/30 for my rabble horde.

finally, I finished another project that’s been on my painting table too long: I’ve used these as beast cavalry in my tournament list and would like to have a 2nd horde. This is the first model of this 2nd horde.

Painting tally

as usual, I keep track of my pile of shame counting the number of newly accrued miniatures compared to those actually finished!

I finished ten new models: three knights, three goblins, two dungeon saga heroines, an elephant and a castle.

Furthermore, i gave 8 cavalry models away. These were 3d-prints I once bought, but haven’t been painting yet. As the 3d quality improves with time, I doubt I will paint these old models, ever.

On the other hand, new models have entered my house. I got 10 more rabble as a present from a friend, and André graciously presented me with 3 new 3d printed models to use in Dungeon saga. Finally, another friend gave me a balefire catapult, which I count as 3 models.

  • start +6
  • painted + 10
  • Gave away 8 models
  • Received 16 new models. (-16)
  • Total = +8!

Still going the right direction!
