It’s been a while. Since last summer, I hardly painted anything and even though Kings of War 4th edition has launched, there’s little gaming around here. Fortunately (for this blog, at least) a month ago a few things changed.
A friend of mine and myself played a 4th edition battle to get a feeling for the game and the edition. I was blindsided by the resillence of defense 5+ hordes and suddenly, I got the urge to paint again.
The first project was born: a horde of revenants.

The models are oldhammer grave guard that I had laying around a long, long time. They’ve been part of a Warhammer army that I bought when GW discontinued their game and cheap armies flooded online selling platforms. Ever since, I used them only once or twice, as they were still single-based. The banner, however, was a beautiful piece of freehand.
As 4th edition appears to be a good spot for hordes, I brazenly built a horde base (using a bit of cork stolen from our hamsterscape) and put all those grave guard on them. As I found 20 models a bit on the sparse side, I added a handful of Mantic revenants including the undead Dwarf King from the Dungeon Saga boxed set.

There’s still that nasty empty place on the left side of the horde, which I will fill out later. The models have been painted, but they require rebasing.
More revenants, more revenants
Another set of revenants that I had laying around was a group of Oldhammer Black knights. These are the alternative models to the soul reaver cavarly that I built ages ago.

The models were built and painted back in the day (Warhammer 6th edition?) and several of them have been included in my Kings of War armies as mounted revenant kings and an undead army standard bearer. Now, I wanted another regiment of revenant cavalry, I combined all six of them into a single regiment. Yes, it’s a bit scarce, but these are the models I own and they fill out the regiment base just enough.

Rebasing heroes
The first thing I did just before starting 4th is rebasing my undead heroes. Here’s the vampire, Army standard, crypt gorger and necromancer. The shambling hordes are ready again!

Austrian ogres
For my friend Stephan from Austria (the host of the glorious örb wars tournament) I built an addition to his ogre forces. (The guy plays ogres but barely has any ordinary warriors).
The horde base was built here (in the Netherlands) using basing materials from Austria. The stones I used to build the horde base are from the Grossglockner, Austria’s biggest mountain. I grabbed a handful gravel when I visited the mountain last summer, so it’s a bit smaller now. 😉 Stone from the Austrian alps contain a lot of minerals, so there’s a certain sparkle in this gravel that stones from elsewhere doesn’t have. This is why I didn’t paint them!

The horde remained unassembled as I had to send it over through the post. I heard they arrived mostly intact and they were received in gratitude!
Skirmish games
Other than the Kings of War, I recently played Saga. It’s a nice little game and since I can get a few games in during the upcoming months, I decided to build a few models for them. Moreover, there’s a distinct possibility that we’re gonna start another skirmish game (maybe Mordheim) soonish, so why not build skirmish warband with both systems in mind?

here’s a few models for the warband with only the test model completed.
Immediately after, I painted one of the warbands heroes and dubbed her Siri. What or who Siri will be, we’ll see. She may or may not be a leader in a Jomsviking warband or possible a mercenary or Sisters of Sigmar warband in Mordheim. For now, she’s just a nice model that I just completed.
The final model I completed was just because I had him laying around. It’s a Warhammer crossbowmen that I used as a test model.

Painting tally:
A reoccuring part of this blog is the where I keep track of my minis waiting for paint, counting my number of newly accrued miniatures compared to those actually finished!
The tally is quite off since I got quite a few 3d painted models and threw out a handful of 3d models for armies that I already completed (ogres, abyssals) or donated these to my kids. I’m gonna cross these off against each other.
Then I stole an ogre batallion from my brother to build the Austrian Ogres. The 20 goblins/8 mawpups are still in my closet. This is 28 models.
I painted 5 austrian ogres, 5 revenants and 3 skirmish models for 13 models.
Totalling:
- start +37
- painted +13
- new models -28
- Total: +22
