So, I went to Clash of Kings 2022. I had a blast, playing many different opponents (of four nationalities, no less) and the athmosphere was great! Look below at the view from our balcony, the huge hall was filled to the brim with gamers!
The clash of Kings / Mantic Venue was on the side rise together with other non-gw games and cardgames while the GW stuff was in the main hall.

Clash of Kings was more international than I’d anticipated. I played against polish, spanish, french and british opponents. Other than the obligatory 18/19 drop ogre lists and the netlist night stalkers that I saw quite a few times, the lists I saw were quite varied. I played against ogres, goblins, then against nighstalkers, furthermore a forces of nature list and finally varangur.
the army list
Despite that I stopped playing this list in the Netherlands, I brought a version to Clash. It’s one of the lists I know best and I don’t need to paint anything to be able to play it. Furthermore, it works quite well, so it helps a lot.
My list was as follows:
- Horde knights, potion of pathfinder. (350)
- Regiment knights (1) (195)
- Regiment knights (2) (195)
- Regiment knights (3) (195)
- Regiment knights (4) (195)
- Regiment mounted sergeants, helm of the drunken ram (165)
- Troop mounted sergeants (100)
- Horde of polearms, indomitable will (185)
- General on winged beast (1), blade of slashing (200)
- General on winged beast (1) (195)
- Hero on pegasus (90)
- Wizard on pegasus (1), lightning instead of fireball (85)
- Wizard on pegasus (2), lightning instead of fireball (85)
- Army standard, lute of darkness (75)
Here’s them in all their splendor.

I really like the army. Except for one horde (to carry tokens) and one character (to save points) everyone is mounted on some kind of steed, which make for a hard-hitting (in theory at least) army.
The results
The results on the battlefield were quite mixed. I did 2-0-3, so I won two while losing three. It was not the result I had hoped for, but most of it was my own doing.
First of all, cavalry is hampered a lot by difficult terrain. And Clash of Kings had a lot of this. All tables ran at 8 or 9 pieces of terrain of which six made me hindered. (Two forests, two swamps and two obstacles, often in the middle of the board). This was a lot more terrain than I’d thought!
Also, I made more mistakes on the battlefield than I should have. Especially against a forces of nature army, I got charged three times (one in a flank) which shouldn’t have happened. This, predictably, cost me the game.
All-in, while this army is the one I am most familliar with, the new environment didn’t help me. If I want to compete next year, I need to practice a lot using the army I will be using.
Which army that will be, will have to be decided when I receive my red book! We’ll see!

Very cool to attend this. I always liked your knight army. Where was the venue?

Thanks, I do like it too! That’s why I opted to take that one instead of a more “mantic” army.
Venue was the Lee Valley Athletics Center in Bentfield, near London.
