Restarting Goblins and other hobby projects

The past weeks consisted of a number of hobby projects, all of which still need basing. That said, there’s a lot of progress. Allow me to present:

Continuing from a few weeks ago I finished the 3 trolls. Combined with the trolls I painted looooong ago, they form a full horde, which is a goal I set myself almost a year ago. Yay!

The basing is to be done, but as I’ve now started painting more units from a goblin army, i postponed building the bases until I can do a few at a time.

Speaking of which: I restarted expanding my goblin army. I stopped doing goblins because I couldn’t bear painting another ugly Mantic goblin. Fortunately, Mantic made new ones and the new goblins are beautiful!

here’s a goblin rabble model with two mawpups. =>

So, expect some goblins here in future updates. I bought too many.... (or not enough, depending on perspective). Here’s the first batch, awaiting fresh paint. The models are a combination of old Mantic metals and even a few plastics, the new Mantic rabble and luggits, GW goblins and a bunch of 3d prints.

I finished the first handful, four luggits and a rabble. The four models on the left are 3d prints (one with a weapon-swap) and the rightmost is an old plastic rabble used as test model for the colouring.

I changed the colouring of the goblins. (old ones here) . The old skin colour was based on bluegrey highlighted via ice blue to nearly white. While I loved this at the time, I have changed my preference over last year to more vibrant colours. This effect I got from tallassar blue contrast paint. (highlighted with ice blue). The more vibrant colours do stand out and I like this colour scheme much better than the old one so I stick at this.

As I will be painting at least 60 of these guys, I’ll expect to empty quite a few pots of contrast paint over the course of the next months. The 2nd batch has been assembled and is waiting to be primed as I write this.

Goal

My goal will be to paint a horde of rabble (30), two regiments of luggits (15 each), at least 5 mawpup counters and a mawpup launcher. After completing these models, I’ll have to base them all alongside the troll horde mentioned earlier this post. This will bring my goblin army over 2,000 points easily and after that I can worry about optimising this army.

Painting lessons

An old friend of mine started painting (DnD) miniatures. It seems that watching youtube tutorials isn’t the same as actually doing, so we spent an afternoon painting 101.

I used the miniature on the left to demonstrate techniques like highlighting, shading and using contrasting colours. The old GW minis make good starters for painting because the details are deep and prominent.

I finished this model and might once add it to my army if regular shooting becomes a thing ever again. From my collection, I gave a couple of models to teach the skill instead of starting with highly detailed dnd minis.

Painting tally

Last week I started out with a negative of -37 miniatures. Ouch….. Fortunately I painted a few.

  • start – 37
  • painted + 9 ( 3 trolls, 5 goblins and a gunner)
  • given away: +3 (3 models)
  • total -25

The task is slightly less daunting, especially since painting a lot of golins has already started. That said, it seems that another 10 goblins are on their way. As I got 10 goblins from participating in a halpi’s rift tournament, a friend of mine got 10 too which he gladly traded me to a 3d print that Andre graciously printed. They are not here yet, but will arrive soon, so better get working on these gobbos to avoid a hobby-pileup!
