Once, upon a time, I dreamt up an Ogre ambush list. Inspired by the ogre lists that everyone was playing at Clash of Kings 2022 and fuelled by the fact that we play Ambush more often these days, this list was a nice project of limited scope. When a mate of mine introduced another slow-grow, I jumped the bandwagon with this project.
My brother owns the STL’s of the Northern Ogres, so we can print these minis at minimal cost. In fact, this army has been nearly free for me, just the hobby costs of paints and resin and so on.
Choosing the right colour
My previous army (the blue goblins) worked great because the skin colour combined with the secondary colours of the miniatures make for a nice constrast. For this army, I wanted something like that.
Before starting the army, I spent some time thinking about the skin colour of the ogres, skipping green (too orcish), red (Abyssal) and yellow (PITA to paint). I’ve also considered white and black, but skipped these too, so it would either be blue (like my goblins) or purple. I painted a test model which came out like this:

I leaned towards purple, until I saw the green-grass basing of the blue ogre which contrasted much better. Moreover, my ogres match with my goblins and can join them if I want to. There’s even some crossover in the red (no, blue!) goblins in the ogre army list! So in the end, I decided in favour of the blue ogre and so the “Blue-gres” were born.
Army list, 750 points Ambush rules
- Warrior regiment (3 models, 120 points)
- Warrior regiment (3 models, 120 points)
- Hunter regiment (3 models, 135 points)
- Sergeant, crossbow (130 points)
- Warlock, lightning 3 (95 points)
- Warlord, crocodog(165 points)
Results
Over the last few months, the army has been completed. Here they are in all their glory:

All models that are part of this can be found elsewhere on this blog (hobby pages) but have been gathered below:

Now what?
The slow-grow may continue, but I’m not sure if I’m going to expand on this army. First of all, the ordinary unlock rules plainly suck for ogres. In Ambush, things go well, but in normal KoW we really need those warrior regiments and my hunters need to go horde. To summarise, my ogres need at least 2 new hordes, just for unlock purposes in 1,000 points.
